Area of Project Implementation

Empowering Communities in Uganda’s Top Eco-Tourism Destinations

The eBUSINESS ECO-TOUR PORTAL (eBETP) is being implemented in two of Uganda’s most iconic eco-tourism destinations, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Kibale National Park. These areas were strategically selected as pilot sites due to their international recognition, ecological significance, and untapped potential for community-driven tourism.

1. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Located in southwestern Uganda, Bwindi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its rich biodiversity and home to nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. It attracts thousands of international tourists annually for gorilla trekking, nature walks, and cultural experiences with the Batwa and Bakiga communities.

However, despite the high tourist traffic, local communities surrounding Bwindi face challenges such as limited access to digital platforms, inadequate marketing skills, and low visibility of their products and services. The eBETP aims to change this narrative by equipping local entrepreneurs with the tools to digitize their businesses and directly engage with global markets. From handcrafted souvenirs and cultural dance performances to local culinary experiences, community members will now be able to showcase and monetize their rich heritage sustainably.

2. Kibale National Park

Kibale National Park, situated in western Uganda, is famous for its chimpanzee tracking and diverse primate species. It is also a hub for eco-tourism and conservation research, attracting tourists, researchers, and students globally. The surrounding communities are rich in cultural heritage and agricultural products, including coffee, vanilla, and honey.

Yet, many small-scale service providers, guides, and artisans in the Kibale region remain digitally excluded. eBETP introduces a new era of digital access by providing a platform where these entrepreneurs can list their services, pre-book cultural experiences, and receive digital training. By integrating agriculture, tourism, and craft production into a unified platform, eBETP enhances the value chain while promoting inclusive development.

Why These Locations Matter

  • High Tourism Potential: Both parks are among Uganda’s top tourist attractions with growing visitor numbers annually.

  • Underserved Communities: Local businesses in these areas face digital and economic exclusion.

  • Cultural and Natural Richness: Both sites offer unique experiences that blend wildlife, nature, and cultural authenticity.

  • Scalability Potential: These regions serve as ideal pilots to demonstrate impact before scaling to other destinations like Queen Elizabeth, Murchison Falls, and Mgahinga National Parks.

By starting with Bwindi and Kibale, the eBETP project sets a foundation for sustainable digital inclusion, economic empowerment, and community-led tourism transformation across Uganda’s tourism landscape.
